You are travelling alone or as a couple, you have a bag each, nothing about the day is tight, and you do not much care which car turns up. Open the app.
The same goes for the unplanned trip. Rideshare is genuinely excellent at the thing it was built for: getting a car to a person who decided thirty seconds ago that they wanted one. We close online bookings six hours ahead precisely because we are not built for that, and we would rather say so than take a booking we cannot staff properly.
So the honest framing is not which is better. It is which problem you actually have.
Everything else follows from this one thing.
Rideshare prices are set at the moment you travel. Uber's own published explanation of surge pricing says that when demand is very high — it gives bad weather, rush hour and special events as examples — prices may increase; that riders can either pay more or wait to see whether rates come back down; and that because rates update in real time, surge can change quickly.
That is not a scandal. It is a deliberate mechanism, it is disclosed, and it is what keeps a car available at 2am on New Year's Day when nobody would otherwise be driving. For hailing, it works.
It fits badly against a flight, though. You booked the flight six weeks ago. You cannot move it because the multiplier is unfavourable on the morning, and you cannot wait to see whether rates come down when boarding closes in forty minutes. The one time you have least flexibility is the one time the price is least settled.
Our side of that. Every fare is published by suburb and vehicle before you book, and it does not move. No surge, no peak rate, no night or public holiday loading on an airport transfer — a 3am pick-up costs what a Tuesday lunchtime pick-up costs. The single exception anywhere in our pricing is charter work, where a pick-up between 11pm and 5am carries $50, and we put that on the page rather than the invoice.

Hailing on arrival means joining whatever market exists at the minute you land. Rideshare apps do offer scheduled and reserve options, and they are worth using if you go that way — but a car hailed at 1am after a three-hour delay is being hailed into the thinnest part of the night.
This is where the comparison usually breaks, and it breaks on geometry rather than price. Five adults with five suitcases do not fit in a sedan. Two rideshares means two fares, two drivers, two arrival times and a conversation in a car park about who has the keys.
A Sprinter 14-Seater takes up to 14 passengers and 15 bags on one booking at one price. The mini coach takes 18. Gold Coast Airport to Surfers Paradise is $125 in a sedan and $305 in the Sprinter — which, split across a group that would otherwise need three cars, is usually the cheaper answer as well as the less annoying one.
Queensland requires children up to 7 years of age to travel in an Australian Standard approved restraint, appropriate for their age and size. That is not negotiable at the kerb, and it is not something a driver can produce on request.

Early departures are the most common thing we do, and they are priced the same as everything else. The hours when fewest drivers are working are exactly the hours when a fixed fare is worth the most — and also the hours when you least want to find out your ride is twenty minutes away.
A small thing that turns out not to be small.

With one bag and good weather, that difference is worth nothing at all. With a pram, two tired children, a car seat and rain, it is worth more than the gap in the fare.
