What the drive is actually like

You leave Coolangatta, join the M1 briefly, then run north up the Gold Coast Highway through Palm Beach, Burleigh and Broadbeach before the towers start. Twenty-eight minutes is the honest average.

It stretches toward an hour in three predictable situations: Friday from about 3pm, Saturday changeover mornings in school holidays, and any day the Highway is down to one lane around Broadbeach. If you are heading to the airport in one of those windows we will recommend an earlier pick-up rather than let you find out at the check-in desk.

Arriving as a group? Six people in a minivan is $155 for the vehicle — about $26 each, direct to your building, with six bags in the back. That is close to what a shared shuttle charges per head, without the four hotel stops before yours.

Being dropped at a Surfers Paradise apartment

Most bookings on this route end at a holiday apartment rather than a hotel with a porte-cochere, and the useful detail is the building name and the street, not just the suburb. Cavill Avenue is partly pedestrianised and the Esplanade has limited standing, so knowing the building lets your chauffeur pick the right side to stop on and save you dragging bags a block in the heat.

If check-in is not until 2pm and you have landed at 9am, say so when you book — a luggage drop then a second short leg is easy to arrange in advance and awkward to improvise on the day.

Questions

Is $125 per person or for the car?

For the car. One passenger or three, a sedan on this route is $125, and that is the fare you pay whatever time you land.

Do you charge more at night or on holidays?

No. There is no surge, no night rate and no public-holiday loading. The price is set by suburb and vehicle only.

How will I find the driver at OOL?

Gold Coast Airport has a single terminal and arrivals comes out into one hall. Your chauffeur is waiting there with a name board, and you will have their name and mobile number before the day. Thirty minutes of free waiting after you land is included.

Can you fit surfboards or golf clubs?

Free of charge where they fit — and on this route they often do not fit in a sedan. Book an SUV or minivan, or add the luggage trailer for $30, and tell us what you are bringing so the right vehicle turns up.

We need child seats.

Capsules, convertible seats and boosters are $15 each and are fitted before we arrive. They have to be booked with the car — a restraint that was not booked cannot be improvised at the kerb, and Queensland law is not flexible about it.
