The short answer

Allow 60 to 90 minutes of driving from most Gold Coast suburbs to Brisbane Airport, and up to two hours on a weekday in peak. Then add your airline's recommended arrival time on top, and a buffer you will not resent if the M1 is clear.

That is the whole method. The rest of this page is about the two numbers people most often get wrong: how long the drive really is from their suburb, and what “peak” means on this motorway.

Off-peak drive times, measured

These are measured off-peak drive times from each suburb to Brisbane Airport, with the fixed sedan fare beside them. The fare is per vehicle, includes tolls and GST, and does not change with the hour you travel.

When the off-peak number stops being true

The M1 between the Gold Coast and Brisbane carries commuter traffic both ways, and a weekday morning or a Friday afternoon can add the better part of an hour. Roadworks, a breakdown in the Logan Motorway merge or a wet school-holiday Saturday all do the same. An off-peak time is a floor, not a promise.

The early flights are the easy ones. A 6am departure means a pick-up well before dawn, when the motorway is close to empty. It is the mid-morning and late-afternoon flights, leaving into the commute, that need the most generous buffer.

A worked example. Say you are flying out of the domestic terminal at 10:00 on a weekday, from Surfers Paradise, and your airline asks you to be at the airport 90 minutes before departure. That puts you at the terminal by 8:30. Peak traffic can stretch the drive towards two hours, so a pick-up around 6:30 is the safe call — not the 7:25 or so the off-peak time would suggest. Your airline's own guidance sets the arrival time, so check it for your flight.

Domestic or international? Tell us which

Brisbane Airport's domestic and international terminals are separate buildings about two kilometres apart. Being dropped at the wrong one costs you the transfer between them at exactly the moment you have no time for it. Give us your flight number when you book and the drop-off is at the right door.

International departures generally ask you to arrive earlier than domestic ones, so the same drive from the same suburb needs an earlier pick-up. More on the two terminals in our Brisbane Airport terminal guide.

Let us do the arithmetic

When we confirm a departure, we recommend a pick-up time worked back from your flight and its check-in cut-off, with the motorway buffer already in it. You are welcome to choose your own; if it looks tight for the day and hour, we will say so rather than quietly hope.

Online bookings close six hours before pick-up. For school holidays, and for any of the Sprinters, book 24 to 48 hours ahead — this route ties a vehicle up for most of three hours, so they go first.

Questions people ask about this run

How long does it take to get from the Gold Coast to Brisbane Airport?

Allow 60 to 90 minutes from most Gold Coast suburbs via the M1 and the Gateway Motorway, and up to 2 hours in weekday peak. Off-peak, our measured drive times run from about 36 minutes from Ormeau to about 73 minutes from Coolangatta.

Do you charge more for a 4am pick-up?

No. There is no early-morning, night or public holiday loading on an airport transfer. A 4am pick-up costs exactly what a midday one does.

Will you tell me what time to be picked up?

Yes. When we confirm a departure we recommend a pick-up time worked back from your flight and its check-in cut-off, with a buffer for the motorway. If you would rather set it yourself, tell us and we will flag it if it looks tight.

Which terminal do I tell you?

Whichever your flight leaves from. Brisbane Airport's domestic and international terminals are about two kilometres apart, so give us the flight number and we will drop you at the right one.

How late can I book?

Online bookings close 6 hours before pick-up. Inside that, call +61 481 437 772 and we will tell you straight away whether a car is free. For school holidays and Sprinters, book 24 to 48 hours ahead.
